1U and 2U for data rooms with proper racking and cooling. The default for anything that has to be dense and serviceable.

For a single site with one or two workloads and no rack. Quieter, cheaper, and the right answer more often than vendors suggest.

Shared file storage, backup targets and virtualisation datastores. Sized against your actual growth curve, not a percentage guess.

Purpose-built targets with immutability, so a ransomware event cannot encrypt the backups along with the originals.

The two numbers that decide the design

Before hardware, two figures need to exist in writing:

  • Recovery time objective: how long this can be down before it hurts.
  • Recovery point objective: how much data you can afford to lose.

Most companies have never written them down, and that is why server purchases go wrong. If a system can be down for a day, one good server may be enough. If it can only be down for an hour, you are buying two, in different rooms.

Why we measure before quoting

Vendor sizing calculators assume you know your workload. Few people do, so the numbers get padded to be safe, and you pay for the padding in hardware, power and cooling for the next five years.

Two weeks of monitoring replaces the guess. It is the cheapest part of the project and it changes the specification more often than not.

Power is not an accessory

We size UPS capacity against measured draw and the runtime you have asked for, not against nameplate ratings. Cooling is planned for where the rack is heading, not for the two servers in it today.

Redundant servers on one unprotected power feed are not redundant. They are an expensive way to lose data on the same schedule as the grid.

Before you commit

You measure. We install lightweight monitoring on your current environment for a representative period, including month-end and your busiest day, then size against real CPU, memory, IOPS and network figures with headroom agreed explicitly. It costs us a fortnight and routinely saves customers more than the monitoring was worth.
